SIMtoDEMOCRACY -> Soluções Locais Integradas

Movimento Social Integrado pela Democracia

Movimento social chamado SIM! O próposito é fazer o agrupamento e aproveitamento de todas as ações da sociedade civil no Rio de Janeiro e fora dele no dia 20 de Junho.

WHY?

Greetings fellow activists and change-makers, We are a diverse group of youth who would like to invite you join us in concrete action that will create integrated social movement between the Major groups and with civil society outside rio centro.  We have been discussing with members of other groups as well as people at the People’s Summit and agree that the future that is being negotiated for us and for the planet here at Rio+20, is not the future that we REALLY want. Its lack of ambition and failure to address the people’s most basic demands is unacceptable and it is time to send this message out to the world, loud and clear. We believe it is time for us, civil society, to draw our own red line, tell governments that they are stepping on this bottom line, and if this trend continues into the outcome, we will regard Rio+20 as a failure.

On Wednesday, June 20 we hope that you will join us in the first of a series of big actions led by the youth. The idea is for as much of civil society as possible to unite behind the over-arching principles on which we will not back down. Our message is “Justice, Rights and Equity the Earth’s integrity.” We hope that this phrase (that we tried make as simple and strong as possible) encompasses at least some of your own priorities and demands for our governments.

We invite you to stand with us behind these basic principles and come to Rio Centro and to People Summit at the Gloday Action Day on Wednesday wearing a red shirt. At 9:30am we will gather in front of the ‘future we want’ wall in plenary 1 to walk in a short march and form “the people’s red line” in front of the pavilion where the negotiators will have their first high-level plenary (without blocking the entrance). There will be one long banner with our core message, and we encourage everyone to bring a piece of paper that says in whatever language they chose “This is the red line:”  along with one word or phrase that is their core demand. Once we are in place, we will pass a ball of red string down the line and each person will hold on to a piece of it, to represent civil society’s red line that must be upheld.

We have requested security to approve this action for up to 200 people. This is meant to be a peaceful and positive action, to remind negotiators of their responsibility to uphold these core principles for the people they are supposed to represent. It will set the basis from which we can can reject the outcomes on the following day if this responsibility is not upheld.

The movement is an initiative to integrate all civil society seeking the same end! We want our voices heard and well represented! When we talk about civil society, we mean active citizens, regardless of their ethnicity, organization / institution, title, status or profession. This is why we are linking with the action organizers at the People’s Summit to perform a similar action in Flamengo park at the same time. We also invite you to encourage all of your contacts back home to organize and take pictures of themselves forming their own red line. Even if it is just four or five people standing in a row wearing red and holding a sign. The idea is to flood social media with these images and allow the rest of the world to unite with us behind this message.

We really believe in people, and we see that the changes we want will be possible only if people change the ways we are living, eating, breathing, sleeping, relating to the environment and with others. Internal changes and perceptions are responsible for major breakthroughs, but they start with people and reflect people! We believe that civil society, given its institutional roots, this very divided based on their differences, and not grouped in front of their similarities. This causes many difficulties we have to act in an integrated manner, to become social workers in fact more representative decision-making, as this conference that will set guidelines for what will be experienced by this and future generations.

This historical moment has enabled the convergence of thousands of people, movements, networks, NGOs … they are in the same city and we enjoy it for dialogue, exchange experiences and mainly act together seamlessly! Thank you!

The mov

Ement is an initiative to integrate all civil society seeking the same end! We want our voices heard and well represented! When we put civil society, we mean active citizens, regardless of their ethnicity, organization / institution, title, status or profession.

We just really believe in people, and we see that the changes we want will be possible only if people change the ways we are living, eating, breathing, sleeping, relating to the environment and with others. Internal changes and perceptions are responsible for major breakthroughs, but they start with people and reflect people! We believe that civil society, given its institutional roots, this very divided based on their differences, and not grouped in front of their similarities. This causes many difficulties we have to act in an integrated manner, and become social workers in fact more representative decision-making, as this conference (Rio +20) that will set guidelines for what will be experienced by this and future generations.

So here are some of the KEY elements that we feel should be represented

What will happen at RioCentro:

The People’s Red Line Youth-led action, with the support of representatives from other major groups including NGOs and women.

Purpose: To unite diverse members of civil society with the youth and draw the essential, red line that we hope this conference will uphold for humanity, the earth and the future. We aim to show a sign of solidarity with the negotiators who need to take great strides in the next days to make decisions that will determine the future of the next generations as well as represent the voice of millions of  people who are not present at Rio and are taking action in their various capacities to promote sustainable development in their communities.

Time: Assemble half an hour before the first plenary session is going to start in the morning. I have heard it will start at 10:00, so will assemble at 9:30. Where: Along one side of Pavilion 1, we will begin to form a line (along the ‘future we want’ wall) l of the wall and not clocking any exits). At 9:45, we will walk in the line towards the courtyard in a single-file line (or two-by two) so as not to block the whole corridor. We will walk in a circle around the outside of the courtyard and then proceed to line the wall at the entrance of Pavilion 3 or 5 (if this is where the plenary is taking place.) The majority of the group will stand there for about 20 minutes and then leave. If allowed, a core group of about 25-50 people will remain standing in place until 1:30.

What: We will all be wearing red shirts to represent the people’s red line. There will be one long banner that will be held by 15 people at the front of the line it will read: “This is the red line:  Justice, Rights and Equity, the Earth’s integrity”. Everyone else in the line will have their own piece of paper that will Say “This is our red line:” translated into their own language, along with one word or phrase that is their core demand. Some people may also be holding pictures of other groups from around the world who have made their own human red-line. Once we are in place, we will pass a ball of  red string down the line and each person will hold on to a piece of it, to represent civil society’s red line that must be upheld.

Who: We would like to have up to 200 people for the first half an hour. Again- I stress that we would be sure not to block any exits or corridors. If any safety concerns come up during the event about our exact placement, I urge security to let myself and/or the MGCY OP’s know right away and we will accommodate to their requests.
